Coast Experience

The farm has access to many private beaches, the closest of which can be reached in a 25 minute walk. The Kaiwhata river which winds lazily through the property has its mouth alongside stunning sandstone cliffs and fascinating rock formations, including the petrified remains of 8000 year old Totara trees. A reef extends out from the cliff which is rich in kaimoana, and is a common feeding area for the local seal population. During the summer the river forms a natural lagoon with still, warm water, ideal for swimming in. A fishing rod or a book would be equally worthy ways of enjoying our piece of the pacific.

Farm Experience

The daily running of the property can provide the opportunity to observe a multitude of farming practices for those interested, such as stock movement or shearing. Please discuss this with Jan or Andy in advance, as there may be safety issues to consider.  The back of the farm is covered in 660 hectares of bush with pockets of regenerating bush in gullies and along waterways all over the property. These are home to many red and fallow deer, who can often be seen sneaking across the farm to the river flats. There is also an array of native bird life on the property, with kereru, fantails and tui being common sights around the farm lodgings, along with some less local breeds, such as quail and pukeko.  Although most locations can be accessed by foot, bringing a 4WD vehicle is advisable to those looking to explore the property while saving their legs.

Outdoor Experience

The property offers many opportunities for walking and mountain biking to explore the many tracks that wind through the hills. From bushy gullies to the seashore the property holds many things to discover, and weekends could just as easily be spent picnicking by the river, as they could hiking to the skyline to admire the view up the coastline. The many farm tracks offer ample opportunity to explore the land on bike, with routes for all fitness levels. A farm map will be provided with the major tracks marked. Access to certain tracks can be dependent on weather and stock location, and will be made known to you upon your arrival. The river has many locations along it worth spending an afternoon by, with swimming holes and native canopies to pass the time under.

Had an amazing time at Jan’s place. The cottage is beautiful. Lots of areas to explore. Jan and Andy are really welcoming and friendly, offer great tips on the surrounding area and were always there when you needed them but also left you to your own devices. Would love to go back. Perfect spot to get away from it all.
